Here we give you a useful list of guidelines for importation of household goods to India.

All goods shipments to India are subject to inspections by the Indian customs authorities and require a clearance certificate before release.
Foreign nationals relocating to India for business or employment are allowed to transfer personal and household goods duty free. The following conditions are attached.

• Cosmetics, toiletries, food, etc.
• Tobacco and alcohol products *
• Electronic equipment and appliances (only one of each item is allowed duty free)
• New items and consumables
• Professional equipment can be imported duty-free.  Evidence needs to be provided proving qualifications of profession to Customs
• Precious Metals, Gems, Jewelry.

*Please note that importation duty for certain goods can be extremely high in India. For instance   importation duty on foreign wine is 100% whilst foreign spirits attract a duty of 150%

Foreign nationals relocating to India can bring domestic pets (cats, dogs, etc). Importation of animals and birds is governed by strict health regulations. You will need to produce the relevant health certificates signed by a Vet before importation
Importation of plants, fruits and seeds is strictly regulated.

• Telephone and Telephony equipments of restricted frequencies.
• Arms, Ammunition or Explosive Materials.
• Specified plants and Seeds
• Medicines and drugs
• Semi processed hides and skins
• Silk worms, silk worm seeds and cocoons
• Vintage products, replicas of antiques or weapons
• Sand and soil
• Human blood plasma and certain products derived from human blood.
• Sandal-wood (except handicraft products & oil)

• Pornographic or obscene materials
• Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
• Counterfeit goods and goods violating any of the legally enforceable intellectual property rights

  Wild life products

• Specified live birds and animals
• Wild animals, their parts and products
• Exotic birds except  where excepted
• Beef, tallow, fat/ oil of animal origin.
• Specified Sea-shells
• Human skeleton

As a general rule for moving to India, if you are planning to take unusual or restricted items you should enquire about specific regulations before departure from your country of origin. You need to be in conformity with the laws of your country of origin as well as Indian Laws.
