Here we give you some guidelines on the different visa types required for entry to India.

  • A Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of application.
  • Get the right information prior to applying for or an Indian Visa. This is beneficial because it saves you time and money. A lot of conflicting information exists and even official websites can be confusing or give incomplete information. 
  • A valid visa is required for expatriates travelling or relocating to India. This can be obtained from the Indian Embassy or Consulate in the applicant's country of residence. Here is a list of different types of Visa required for entry to India. Please be aware that conditions for obtaining Visas’ for India will change from time to time.

Business Visa India: Valid for 1 year or 2 years in exceptional circumstances.

Employment Visa India:  Usually granted for 1 or 2 years, can be extended in India if required.
Project Visa: Recently introduced, this is a short term employment Visa

Tourist Visa India: Valid for up to 6 months with multiple or single entry options.
Student Visa India: Valid for the duration of studies, letters of University/College admission required.

Conference Visa India:  For the duration of conference or Seminar.

Transit Visa India: Maximum of 15 days.
 

Business Visa

An Indian business visa can be granted for 1 or 2 years.  Criteria for 2 year Indian business visas are more stringent. In order to obtain an Indian Business Visa the following must be submitted:

  • A letter from a company in the applicants country of origin stating the nature of the  business in India, reasons for the applicants visit and an undertaking by the company that all the necessary financial  expenses can be met for the duration of the stay in India.
  • A letter of invitation from an Indian company stating the nature of business and reasons for inviting applicant. If you are visiting multiple organizations there is a separate form to fill out.
  • Depending on the applicants country of origin there may be a restriction of 180 days stay in India, in which case there is no need to register at the FRRO (foreigner’s regional registration office). If however there is no restriction of 180 days then registration will be required within 14 days of arrival in India
  • A valid passport for the duration of the stay and 2 passport sized photographs.
  • There may also be some additional forms to fill out requesting personal details; these can be obtained from the local Embassy or consulate
 
Employment Visa India

An Indian employment visa is normally issued for a 1 year period. It can be renewed in India without having to return the country of origin where the visa was issued. The renewal will be on the provision that the employer for which the visa has been issued has not changed.  In order to obtain an Indian Employment Visa the following must be submitted:

  • A copy of the employment contract and proof of the company’s registration in India.
  • A letter from the employer stating the nature of the position, duration of the contract and salary.
  • A passport that is valid for the duration of your stay in India.
  • Registration at the local FRRO will be required within 14 days of arrival in India.
  • An employment visa can be extended in India.
  • Certain business visas can be extended in India.
 
FRRO: Foreigners Regional Registration Office

Visa registration is a mandatory requirement by the Indian authorities within 14 days of arrival in the country. Any person possessing an Indian employment visa of 1 year's duration or more and other Visas where the stay is extending beyond 180 days are obliged to register.

Please note that Visas cannot be converted in India form one type to another; this will have to be completed in the country of origin along with relevant paperwork submitted for the Visa type being applied for.
