| Overview |
Mumbai is an island city surrounded
by water and one of the most densely populated in the
world. With limited space to expand real estate prices
are the highest in India.
In fact the city is built on archipelago of 7 islands
merged into 1 by the British East India Tea company
in the 1800's.
Formerly known as Bombay, it is the capital of the Indian
state of Maharashtra and gets its name from the Goddess
of the Koli fishing community- Mumbadevi a symbol of
mother earth.
In 1995 the name was officially changed from Bombay; however
you will still hear many people refer to the city as Bombay,
especially the older generation. |

Bar & Lounge - Juhu - Mumbai |
Restaurants and
Bars are location specific in Mumbai. This means that
you will get a high density of restaurants, bars and
nightclubs in some areas and very few if any in other
areas.
So for instance in Bandra, Khar and Juhu in North Mumbai
there is a big selection, go any further north and there
is not much to choose from.
The Restaurant and nightlife business in general has
been a high growth area in recent years. Nowadays you
can get almost any type of culinary dish in Mumbai,
including good European food (French, Italian, and Spanish).
You can expect to pay European prices in high end restaurants
especially in 5 star hotels. It’s pretty much
the same in trendy bars |

| Economy |
Mumbai is the financial
services engine of India and home to many foreign banks
and financial institutions. More are making a b-line
for the city as liberalization increases and economic
restrictions are relaxed. Other sectors of note include
IT, Diamonds, Oil & Gas, Shipping, Healthcare, Insurance,
Outsourcing and Engineering. Massive public building
projects are underway as the government attempts to
modernize the infrastructure. Mumbai is also home
to the huge Bollywood film industry with many of the
big stars being residents in the City. |

| Transport |
 |
|
Auto Rickshaw Mumbai – with sign “love is sweet poison”
|
Trains, Buses, Taxis
and auto-rickshaws are the main forms of transport in
Mumbai.
Trains are very cheap but can be incredibly packed at
rush hours and it's almost impossible to get on unless
you are a seasoned rugby player then you'll get good
practice for the game!
Buses are also cheap but many do not have A/C, they
can be a sweltering experience and crowded.
Taxis are also cheap, some have A/C but black and yellow
cabs have no A/C's.
Auto-rickshaws are available in the north of the city
(Bandra onwards). They are a cheap and convenient way
of getting around the suburbs of the city - even for
an expatriate.
Car hire with driver can be arranged for as little as
1,500 rupees per day - ($30) |

| Healthcare
- Medical Facilities |
India has a wide
range of healthcare facilities. However you get what
you pay for and there is no such thing as free health
care in India. Whilst facilities are not as state of
the art as they are in a lot of western countries, things
are improving all the time. Costs are generally below
what expats would have to pay in their home country,
(if that country does not have free or subsidized healthcare).
Indian doctors are well trained and many go on to work
in Europe or the Middle East.
Private hospitals are widely available and can be found
almost all expat residential areas, as well as Dentists,
Opticians, Gynecologists.
Specialized hospitals also exist for specific conditions
of the heart, cancer, etc.
It is recommended for Expats to register at the hospital
or doctors office. Some of the more prominent hospitals
in Mumbai are as follows:
- Beach Candy Hospital - Beach Candy: www.breachcandyhospital.org
- Bombay Hospital - Marine Lines, South Mumbai: www.bombayhospital.com
- Jaslok Hospital - Peddar Road, South Mumbai : www.jaslokhospital.net
- Tata Memorial Hospital - Parel, Central Mumbai:
www.tatamemorialcentre.com
- Lilavati Hospital - Bandra Reclamation Mumbai: www.lilavatihospital.com
Private health care insurance is the best option. Otherwise,
make sure that the company has health insurance cover
for your whole family. |

| Climate |
Weather in Mumbai
or even India falls into 2 main categories Monsoon (June
to Sept ) and non-Monsoon.
It is an extremely important climatic event for India.
The Indian stock exchange can rise or fall on the strength
or weakness of the rains. All the rain that is going
to fall will come in these 4 months. Without it
there would be very little water supply or even drinking
water and almost all agricultural production would grind
to a halt. Temperature cool during Monsoon months and
make the heat of the city more bearable but humidity
rises.
Average Summer Temperature: 30C
Average Winter Temperature: 18C
